Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Pécs
Training at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Pécs started in September 2000 following the establishment of the institutes of pharmaceutical sciences. The Pharmacy Programme was accredited by the Hungarian Board of Accreditation (MAB) in 2006. As MAB stated: “The Pharmacy Programme at the University of Pécs meets all the requirements of a training programme in every aspect. A significant number of professors with scientific qualifications warrant the quality of the academic training to educate well-prepared pharmacists in accord with European standards.”
The founding head of school of the training is dr. János Szolcsányi, professor and academician, who in the submission initiating the training supported the launch of the new training with the following arguments:
- Prior to the start of pharmacy training in Pécs, the training system of the universities in Transdanubia lacked pharmacist training, therefore those wishing to study in this region could satisfy their training needs only in the more remote part of the country (Budapest, Szeged, Debrecen).
- It was necessary to increase the supply of pharmacists in Transdanubia in the fields of parmaceutical Distribution, pharmaceutical manufacturing, drug controlling promotion of medicinal products.
The Pharmacy Programme initially was part of the Medical School. The independent Faculty of Pharmacy was established in 2016.

Professor Loránd Barthó, Professor Attila Dévay, Professor János Szolcsányi, member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, former leader of the programme, Professor Lajos Botz and Professor Pál Perjési, the second leader of the programme and the first dean after the foundation of the Faculty. A co-founder of the programme and founder of the Department of Pharmacognosy, Professor Laszlo Gyula Szabo is unfortunately not in the photo.
Aim of the training
Pharmacists, experts on medicine, carry out a variety of activities depending on the needs of communities they work for. They formulate and control medications, know the actions and uses of medicine, the effect medicine has on the human body, as well as the interaction of different agents, the biological benefits of different preparations and the modes for the rational, economical and effective administration of drugs.
We aim to train pharmacists who –based on the acquired theoretical knowledge- have both hands-on skills and ethical views and as a result are able to participate in the diverse system of health care, pharmaceutical research, technology, including manufacturing and engineering science.
Our students are required to undertake a five-year programme of training. In the first semesters the emphasis is put on the acquisition of basic knowledge in biology, chemistry and physics. Theoretical knowledge and hands-on skills are acquired at the Departments of Anatomy, Physiology, Pathophysiology, Microbiology and Immunology. Following the completion of the second year of study, students begin to acquire in-depth knowledge in pharmacy-related subjects, such as pharmaceutical chemistry, biopharmacy, pharmaceutical technology.
Venue of the education is partly in the main building of the School of Medicine and the main building in the Faculty in Rokus utca 2, nearby. Students are also have classes in the clinics of the Medical School Following the ninth semester students participate in in-service training in a community pharmacy or at a pharmaceutical department of a hospital or clinic. Students interested in undergraduate research are encouraged to take part in the work of TDK (Undergraduate Research) and join the research done at a chosen institute or department.
The most diligent students can continue their studies in the Pharmaceutical Sciences PhD School of the Faculty. At present, the Department of Pharmacognosy, Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Department of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology and the Department of Pharmacy launches PhD programs.
We aim to train pharmacists who – based on the acquired theoretical knowledge - have both hands-on skills and ethical views and are able to participate in diverse fields of health care, pharmaceutical research, and pharmaceutical industry. With a pharmaceutical diploma one can work not just in public but hospital and clinical pharmacies as well. People with research interest can find a job in pharmaceutical research companies. Young fellows with economical interest can be involved in the market or management of pharmaceutical materials.
