Pécs celebrates the jubilees of pharmacy education

Today

This September, the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Pécs reached a remarkable milestone — celebrating a triple anniversary in connection with World Pharmacists Day. The event marked 25 years of pharmacy education, 20 years of postgraduate specialist pharmacist training, and 10 years of the Faculty’s independence.

The celebration brought together university leaders, educators, students, professional organizations, and partners to honor the achievements and milestones of the past decades while reflecting on the future of pharmaceutical education and the profession. Adding to the event’s prestige, the Hungarian Society for Pharmaceutical Sciences held its national World Pharmacists Day program in Pécs as part of the occasion.

In his welcome speech, Prof. Dr. Attila Miseta, Rector of the University, emphasized that since its establishment, the Faculty has represented dedication, knowledge, and collaboration within the University. Prof. Dr. József Bódis, Rector Emeritus and Chief Advisor to the President of the UQA, recalled the early challenges of achieving independence, noting:

“Without a foundation of knowledge, a faculty cannot grow or even function.”
He highlighted that today, the Faculty of Pharmacy in Pécs is recognized not only regionally but also internationally — thanks in part to its strong international student community — and expressed gratitude to all colleagues and students for strengthening the University’s reputation through their work and commitment.

One of the most memorable moments of the day was the roundtable discussion “Reflections on the Early Years,” moderated by Dr. András Fittler, Dean of the Faculty. Panelists — Prof. Dr. Pál Perjési, Prof. Dr. Lajos Botz, Prof. Dr. Miklós Nyitrai, Prof. Dr. Attila Miseta, and Prof. Dr. Péter Németh — shared personal recollections and insights into the beginnings and development of pharmacy education in Pécs.

Representatives of all Hungarian faculties of pharmacy also joined the celebration. Dr. Krisztina Ludányi (Semmelweis University), Prof. Dr. Zsolt Szakonyi (University of Szeged), and Dr. István Lekli (University of Debrecen) each conveyed their congratulations and emphasized the importance of unity and cooperation among Hungarian pharmacy schools.

Further greetings came from professional organizations: Dr. Enikő Fodor Lukácsné, President of the National Association of Private Pharmacists; Dr. Zoltán Hankó, President of the Hungarian Chamber of Pharmacists; Dr. András Süle, President of the Hospital-Clinical Section of the Chamber; and Dr. Zsolt Muskáth, Professional Director of the Network Pharmacies Association.

The morning’s celebrations were followed by the World Pharmacists Day professional symposium of the Hungarian Society for Pharmaceutical Sciences, opened by Prof. Dr. Lajos Botz, President of Hungarian Society for Pharmaceutical Sciences. Under the motto “Think Health, Think Pharmacist,” the lectures addressed key issues such as the impact of climate change on health and the future directions of pharmaceutical care.

The day concluded with a standing reception, where faculty members, students, partners, and guests raised their glasses to celebrate shared achievements, the Faculty’s success, and the bright future of pharmacy education in Pécs.
